Discovering Herstory: A Modern Exploration of Women in the Torah

Next Event: December 7, 2015

In this class, we will explore the lives of the Torah’s most intriguing women and ask ourselves what they mean to us today. From Eve to Sarah to Esther to Serah bat Asher (ever heard of her?), the women of the Bible will come alive as we imagine their own voices and perspectives in new ways. Through in-depth text study of Torah narratives, modern Jewish scholarship, and ever-emerging commentaries, including feminist midrash and poetry, we will seek to reclaim the many her-stories that exist in the Torah and beyond. Through group discussion and creative reflection, we will also explore what we can learn from the fascinating and complex lives of the first women we read about in Jewish history.
