Belmont World Film holds its annual World Refugee Day observance and celebrates Pride Month this June with the East Coast premiere of the Israeli film “Concerned Citizen,” which had its world premiere at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival.

The film follows Ben and Raz (played by real-life couple Shlomi Bertonov and Ariel Wolf), a gay couple living in an updated flat in a migrant neighborhood who are painstakingly pursuing their desire to have a child. When one of the men decides to improve his neighborhood by planting a tree on his street, it triggers a sequence of events leading to the arrest of an Eritrean immigrant. The satirical parable brings to light our unconscious but deep-seated prejudices.

The film will be shown both in-person on World Refugee Day on June 20 and online from June 16-22. The screening is sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel to New England. It is co-presented by Wicked Queer Film Festival and LexPride.

Audience members will have access to a Q&A with the film’s director, Idan Haguel, pre-recorded especially for Belmont World Film and moderated by Avner Shavit, one of the most prominent film critics in Israel and currently a professor at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The Q&A will also be shown at the in-person screening at the West Newton Cinema.

World Refugee Day is an annual worldwide observance that honors the world’s 22.5 million refugees and those who work to help them. This year’s observance focuses on the right to seek safety—whoever they are, wherever they are from and whenever they are forced to flee.
