Taught by Meryl Cohen and Rabbi Eliana Jacobowitz
6 sessions, Sunday mornings 11:00 am – 12:15 pm
November 2, 9, 16, 23; December 7, 14

As the leaves fall, our series on the Jewish life cycle begins at the end, with a class on death and mourning. In each session, we’ll examine a topic from several perspectives. Rabbi Eliana will teach practice and theory – what we do, and why we do it. Meryl Cohen will help us explore psychological aspects of the topic, drawing on sources in philosophy and poetry. We’ll cover areas such as what happens between death and the funeral; the funeral itself; shiva; special times and practices around remembrance; and what Judaism has to say about reincarnation and the resurrection of the dead. Whether you are looking for practical knowledge to help you deal with the death of a loved one in the future, or want to reflect on the meaning of this sacred transition, or are simply curious, we hope you’ll join us for this engaging and thought-provoking class.

Meryl Cohen is a social worker, splitting her time between a clinic in Dorchester, where she does psychotherapy, and her home office, where she also does psychotherapy.  She has been a member of Congregation B’nai Brith for ten years.

Rabbi Eliana Jacobowitz is Rabbi and Education Director at Temple B’nai Brith. She received Rabbinic ordination at the Rabbinic School at Hebrew College in Newton, where she also earned an MA in Judaic Studies. Born and raised in Israel, Rabbi Eliana studied fashion design and attended law school at Tel Aviv University. In the US, she earned a BA in history from Colorado University and an MA in medieval history from Boston University. She edited the Hebrew translation of These Are the Words by Arthur Green (Yediot Acharonot Press, 2008).
