Join us for the world premiere of a new work by Boston composer Linda J. Chase. Chase is also a flutist, professor at Berklee College of Music and instructor at New England Conservatory. This interfaith oratorio is informed by the difficult challenges in the world and how we can come together—people of all faiths to build a more just and sustainable world.
The cross-genre oratorio for choir, soloists and chamber orchestra, “For Our Common Home: Resounding Eco-Justice,” was inspired by “Laudato Si’,” an encyclical issued by Pope Francis calling on humanity to acknowledge the urgency of the environmental crisis and work toward building a more just and sustainable world. Chase interprets the text as a call to action through music.
To create the libretto, Chase collaborated with world-renowned theologian and author Harvey Cox for guidance with the text. In his book, “Common Prayers: Faith, Family, and a Christian’s Journey Through the Jewish Year,” Cox offers an intimate tour through the Jewish year certain to inform and enlighten Jews and non-Jews alike. As a member of an interfaith household, Cox has had ample opportunity to reflect upon the essence of Judaism and its complex relationship to Christianity.
Pope Francis wrote this letter addressing people of all faiths, which Chase interprets musically. For example, one piece is called “We Are Dust” and starts with two cellos and piano in a jazz/classical style, then moves to a hora dance/klezmer style (in which Hankus Netsky is playing piano and Abilgale Reisman awesome klezmer violin!). Then there is a jazz trio that is very much in the gospel tradition. The libretto uses inclusive language (such as God or Creator) to emphasize connections found in different faith traditions.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the composer will talk for a moment about the piece at 7:45 p.m.
