Taught by Dr. Jacob Meskin, Our four-session class is designed for young adults of all levels intending on going on the CJP Spark Israel trip. This invigorating class will introduce you to contemporary life in Israel, a modern, multi-cultural and complicated state. We will first provide some background and history of the Modern state of Israel, and then “taste” the flavor of food and modern culture and music of Israel through music, contemporary poetry and film. Prepare to be surprised and amazed at the richness and variety of offerings from the secular to religious!

Our 4 sessions will encompass:
A brief history of the Modern state of Israel, and Israeli life today as a multi-religious and multi-cultural state. We’ll explore recent history and then explore some fascinating details such as the differences between Ashkenazim, Sephardim and Mizrachim in Israel.

Sample Modern Israeli and Jewish culture and humor through music, videos, modern film and tv-keeping in mind some of the details we explored in the week above!

Taste Israel food and drinks-we will look at the culture of food and some complicated and interesting histories of food in Israel. Prepare to learn more about hummus than you ever expected!

We will explore some of the many different cultures and identities of Israel including Yemenite Jews, Ethiopian Jews (including the airlifts of 1984, 1985 and 1991), Palestinian Arabs, Russian Jews, LGBTQ Jews and more.
