The Elie Wiesel Center for Judaic Studies at Boston University is pleased to announce the first in a planned annual series of lectures named in honor of the late German-American rabbi and philosopher Leo Trepp (1913-2010).

The Inaugural speaker is Professor Susannah Heschel (Dartmouth College), who will speak on “Joy and Obligation: The Legacies of Leo Trepp and A. J. Heschel,” a reconsideration of the work and path of a German and a Polish Jewish theologian who made their homes in America and shaped the way we see Judaism today.

In this lecture, held on March 4, 5pm, at the BU Hillel House (213 Bay State Road, Boston MA 02215), Professor Heschel will compare the work of two outstanding personalities who represented the ideal of a unified personality in a hybrid world. Growing up in places of rampant intolerance, they forged paths of tolerance and inclusiveness while maintaining their particular heritage. Prof. Heschel will introduce us to the life and work of two eminent Continental Jewish thinkers who gave us a model of integrated personhood. The title “Joy and Obligation” is a homage to Leo Trepp, a widely-known and revered rabbi and thinker, who while maintaining a traditional life of halakhic obligation was known for his joie de vivre.
