Conceived as a TV mini-series and aired on Polish television in 1989, each episode is based on one of the ten commandments. Directed and written by the acclaimed Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who later made movies in French such as the Double Life of Veronique and The Three Colors (Red,White, and Blue), this series is routinely listed as one of the best films of all time.

In this episode, an elderly doctor is approached by a woman with a complicated request. Her husband is gravely ill and may die, and she is pregnant by someone else. If her husband dies, she wants to keep the child, but not otherwise, and she wants the doctor to give him an honest verdict on his chances. But the doctor is disturbed by her request, because his answer will directly affect the life or death of another human being. Is he entitled to play God?

Discussion will be facilitated by Bruce Ditzion, M.D., Director of the Primary Care Center at Mount Auburn Hospital. For over 10 years, Dr. Ditzion has taught a class on the patient/doctor relationship to medical students at Harvard Medical School.
