David, a 17-year-old yeshiva student, lives in Brighton Beach with his Russian immigrant family. Between regularly helping out as a 10th man in area minyans and spending time at his grandfather’s senior housing complex, where he befriends a closeted elderly gay couple, David escapes to the East Village.
It’s the 1980s and as David wrestles with his identity, faith and sexuality, the HIV/AIDS crisis looms. Evocative and told with quiet humor, “Minyan” is based on a story by David Bezmozgis.
