“A historic film.” –The New Yorker

“A monumental film.” -Film Comment

“Fascinating and Impressive… portrait of an individual whose actions still defy comprehension, and the self-portrait of an artist consumed by the past.”  -The New York Times

“Utterly fascinating. A reminder of another way documentaries can be made: simply, agonizingly, without comedy or narcissism, and with unforgettable, almost unbearable power.” –Esquire

Lanzmann’s interviews with Benjamin Murmelstein—the final President of the Jewish Council in Theresienstadt and the only “Elder of the Jews” to survive the war—reveal a wry and authentic storyteller, who candidly reflects on his unique role, for which he was demonized and celebrated. The Last of the Unjust provides an incisive view of this complex, beguiling man and exposes, without artifice, the savage contradictions of the Jewish Councils. (Director: Claude Lanzmann, France/Austria, 2013, 218 min)
