Join us for a series of three virtual workshops hosted by Jewish LearningWorks about teens’ mental health for Jewish youth professionals featuring Dr. Betsy Stone.

Adolescence can be a bumpy road any year, but combined with a pandemic, everything is exacerbated. Our teens’ natural growth and development brings along challenges and celebrations that call for us to be prepared and present.

In this three-part series, we will explore different aspects of adolescent development and how we can best support our teens considering the constraints and compounding effects of the pandemic on them and ourselves. Join us for these conversations and come away with tools and advice to support the teens with whom you work.

Aimed at youth professionals and anyone who interacts with Jewish teens, including parents.

Schedule:

Jan. 18: Teens and Their Brains

What happens in adolescence that makes teens so challenging? Why the mood swings, impulsivity, poor judgment? Why do they seem so reasonable some of the time—and then so unreasonable?

March 16: Choosing Transactional or Relational Interactions

Adolescents thrive when they have relational interactions with adults, and yet transactional interactions are necessary in day to day life. How do we make the decision between relational and transactional, and which do we choose to use when and where?

April 27: Launching and Seeking

How has the pandemic impacted our teens’ ability to manage transitions and how do we support our teens as they navigate through new stages? How can we create openness in our programming so that our teens feel encouraged to grapple with big questions in life? What is spirituality anyway?

Dr. Betsy Stone is a Yale-educated psychologist and an engaging speaker whose topics of interest include teens and their brains; Gen-Xers as parents; trauma in your body and your brain; post-traumatic growth; psychological adaptation to retirement; spirituality and many others. Dr. Stone is a retired clinical psychologist with experience teaching in synagogue schools, at Hebrew Union College since 2002 and to groups of educators, rabbis and parents.
