Congregation Beth Elohim welcomes return speaker Yousef Bashir for his third visit with our community. This virtual event enables us to welcome an even greater audience to hear and appreciate this remarkable spokesman for peace.

When he was 11 years old, Bashir’s home in Gaza was occupied by Israeli soldiers, all while his family continued to reside there. At age 15, he was shot in the spine by an Israeli soldier in plain view of his family members. Sent to a hospital in Tel Aviv for treatment, he underwent a year of rehabilitation. Inspired by the words of his father, he decided that his life’s goal would be to end the cycle of senseless violence. He went on to complete his education in Israel and in the United States.

Bashir first joined us in 2013 while pursuing his master’s degree at Brandeis University in the Conflict Resolution and Coexistence (COEX) Program. In 2019 he published his memoir, “The Words of My Father: Love and Pain in Palestine.” In 2019 he was interviewed by JewishBoston.

Bashir currently works at the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace in Washington, D.C. We are honored to welcome him back via Zoom to discuss his life and work.
