At a time of widespread pessimism about the prospects for resolving the long-running conflict between Israel and Palestinians, this course, taught by two experts on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Dov Waxman and Jay Rothman, examines different ways to resolve, transform or ameliorate the conflict.

Sequence of classes:

  • Introduction and approaches to conflict resolution (Jay)
  • A brief history of peacemaking efforts and why they failed (Dov)
  • Alternative solutions: two states, one state or a confederation? (Dov)
  • Alternative strategies: grassroots peace-building and functional cooperation (Jay)
  • Our role in promoting peace: what we can do and why we should do it (Jay and Dov)

Taking this course will give you a historically informed and holistic understanding of ways to achieve peace and end the occupation.

Required text: “The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: What Everyone Needs to Know” by Dov Waxman (Oxford University Press, 2019).
