Before the Holocaust, a historic German passion play called the “Oberammergau” reflected anti-Judaism in its script, staging and costumes. Depicting the last week of Jesus’s life, the play dated back to 1634 and was performed every 10 years from that point onward. Almost 400 years later, it continues to draw international audience. Yet the horror of the Holocaust prompted a rethinking of the production.
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is holding a virtual event that will show how dialogue and changes in Catholic teaching about Jews and Judaism affected the play since the Holocaust.
The speakers will include:
- Christian Stuckl, directory of “2022 Oberammergau Passion Play” in Oberammergau, Germany
- Rev. Dr. Peter Pettit, a teaching pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa, and a specialist in the history of Jewish-Christian relations
The moderator will be Dr. Rebecca Carter-Chand, director of programs on ethics, religion and the Holocaust at the museum’s Mandel Center.
The event is co-presented with the Washington National Cathedral.
