Rock of Ages: Melody and Meaning

December 3, 2014

With Rabbinic Intern Aliza Berger

On the big screen of life, dissonance comes easily between melody and meaning. For all of our emotional attachment to the familiar Chanukah song known in English as “Rock of Ages,” Maoz Tzur, in its litany of pain and disquieting response, can be a song of Maoz Tzuris! Sometimes, beloved melodies are host to challenging messages. Come learn about Maoz Tzur, a reflection of tensions in our history and psyche, its musical journey from the 12th century until today. Modeling an approach to liturgical song, we will infuse Ma’oz Tzur with new musical energy to make it a delicious part of our Chanukah experience. Through one prayer, we will also explore the ways in which liturgical music can show up in strange places, and how popular music winds its way into our homes and shuls disguised by different lyrics. As time allows, we will explore the melody and meaning of other favorites in the Chanukah repertoire as well. This class will be accessible and enjoyable for all levels of Jewish and musical knowledge. Come prepared to hear and to sing wonderful music, to explore and enjoy, and to be delightfully surprised!
