IDF Maj. Gen. Golan was recently in the news when, on Oct. 7, he put on his uniform and drove his Toyota Yaris to the Gaza border area and rescued three civilians hiding from Hamas in the fields near the Nature Music Festival. He is currently visiting Israeli border communities and advising them on protective measures.

Gen. Golan served in the IDF for 38 years. His career included service in the 1982 Lebanon War, commander of a paratroop battalion engaged in counter-guerrilla operations in the South Lebanon conflict and in the First Intifada, and commander of the Nahal Infantry Brigade during the Second Intifada, commander of Home Front Command during Operation Cast Lead and commander of the Northern Command. In December 2014, he was appointed deputy chief of staff. He retired from active service in 2018. Gen. Golan was also elected to the Knesset as a member of the Democratic Union and Meretz parties, and served as deputy minister of economy.
