Spinoza and the Law at Temple Sinai

May 11, 2014 Brookline

“Spinoza and the Law” at Temple Sinai, May 4 and 11

What is it about Spinoza’s conception of law that made the 17th century thinker the most reviled man in the Amsterdam Jewish community, the favorite son the Zionist movement aimed at developing the State of Israel, the most beloved predecessor of contemporary Marxist theory, and the strangely compelling precursor to contemporary neuroscience?   The class for adults will explore these questions and consider what Spinoza understands by ”law” and the consequences such an understanding has for freedom, religion, politics, and human existence.  Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, a Professor of Philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross and an engaging teacher, will teach this Adult Learning class which takes place at Temple Sinai, Brookline, on Sunday mornings, May 4 and 11, 11:00 – 12:30 p.m.    Call the Temple Sinai office, 617-277-5888, for more information.
