Five unusual biblical books—Ruth, Esther, the Song of Songs, Lamentations and Ecclesiastes—have a unique niche in Jewish life: each provides a liturgy for a festival in the cycle of the year. Beyond that, each of these books is delightfully idiosyncratic compared to the rest of the Bible.
We will discover together just what makes these books so special, through a close reading of the primary texts as well as secondary literature that puts them in the context of Israel’s experience in the ancient Near East.
