Join executive director Jeremy Burton in conversation with JCRC study tour educator Yishay Shavit for a discussion on his new book, “Heartbeats: The Insider’s Guide to Israel.” Hear from one of Israel’s most talented experiential educators on the perspectives, narratives and dilemmas of the country.

Shavit was born on a kibbutz in the northern part of Israel. In 2000, he moved to Jerusalem, fell in love with the city and hasn’t looked back. Shavit, a history and hiking lover, was first introduced to the world of guiding at the age of 15 in his youth movement. Shavit holds a bachelor’s degree in history, focusing on Indian Jewry and contemporary Jewry. He has been guiding educational groups coming to Israel since 2006 and is one of the co-authors of the book “Heartbeats: The Insider’s Guide to Israel.” Shavit is a political and social activist who is devoted to making Israel an equal and just society for all. When not guiding, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Noa, and their two sons, Yotam and Assaf.

“Heartbeats” is a labor of love conceived by Ya’acov Fried, a pioneer and leader in the world of educational travel, and Gilad Peled and Shavit, two leading tour educators. Fried, Peled and Shavit brought together nearly two dozen tour educators hailing from across the spectrum of Israeli life to contribute to this eclectic anthology. What do they all have in common? They are a highly valued group of expert professionals who are passionate about sharing their insights into the diversity of Israel’s ancient landscape and extraordinary people. The travel educators featured in “Heartbeats” represent the true panorama of the country and society, bringing the reader to a depth of knowledge and understanding far beyond the typical guide book and travel experience. Enjoy your journey.
