Judaism has been around for over 3,000 years. How should we think about a practice that may be 2,000 years old? Join Gesher* member Evan Busch for a conversation about Shaye J.D. Cohen’s article “The Origins of the Matrilineal Principle in Rabbinic Law,” which traces the history of an ancient concept underlying major controversies in contemporary Jewish life. This leads to questions about Jewish identity, tradition, change, the Bible, rabbinic law and what it all means for the Jewish present and future.
Participants are asked to read the article ahead of time. The paper defines most of its technical jargon and the footnotes are largely unnecessary to understand the main text. A timeline of texts and events referred to in the article is available here.
