Our pre-Yom Tov session starts with, “What Does the Winter of ‘73 Have To Say to the Spring of ‘23?” presented by Rabbi Wes Gardenswartz. We will listen to different versions of two songs that speak to Israel at 75 and analyze what they teach us about the price, and the promise, of a homeland for the Jewish people.
When the chag begins, our study sessions kick off with a keynote address by Lisa Fishbayn Joffe on “Jewish Perspectives on Reproductive Rights.” We then break into smaller concurrent sessions that include “Rabbinic Rulings During the Shoah: Moral Guidance in the Face of Nazi Negation” led by David Rozenson, “Singing at Sinai” with rounds and chants taught by Cantor Lorel Zar-Kessler, and “From TzaRaH to TzoHaR: Using Difficult Tight Constricted Places in Our Lives as Portals to Liberation and Fuller Living” led by Rabbi Jeff Foust.
After a refreshment break, concurrent sessions will continue with Irle Goldman leading “The Shavuot Story: How Each of Us Can Connect Heaven and Earth,” “A Yiddish Story and the Bible: Two Texts on the Significance of a Synagogue” led by Ronnie Levin, “How To Be a Friend in Judaism” taught by Rabbi Neal Gold, and Robbie Fein teaching “Are We Obligated to Be Empathic to All Jews? To All People?”
After a midnight snack, our late-night program starts with “To Be Part of a People Apart” led by Howard Zilber, and “An Economist Reads the Torah’s First Commandment” taught by Yair Listokin. Morry Safer, our resident song leader, will lead two sessions of “Carlebach or Not Carlebach? A Late-Night Musical Quiz” to keep us awake and singing. “Rabbinic vs. Feminist Readings of a Midrash From Shir HaShirim Raba” will be taught by Roberta Gross-Torres, Susan Bergman will lead “Origin of Gender From the Creation Story” and “An Israeli Songwriter Challenges His Generation” will be led by Robbie Fein prior to our sunrise shacharit service.
