Tisha B’Av is the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, observed as a communal day of fasting and mourning in remembrance of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Over time, the solemnity of Tisha B’Av has allowed Jews to reflect thoughtfully on the painful times of challenge and danger throughout history.

This powerful day is still relevant to Judaism 2,000 years later. Rabbi Andrew Oberstein and Cantor Alicia Stillman will lead our candle-lit service with soft singing, discussion and the chanting of the book of Lamentations, the anguished recounting by Jeremiah of watching his beloved city burn. If you cannot join us on-site in the Temple Israel garden, you can join us online for the service.

Schedule:

  • 7:30 p.m. Community gathering with light refreshments
  • 8-9:30 p.m. Havdalah and Tisha B’Av service

The Tisha B’Av service is sponsored jointly by Temple Israel of Boston, Temple Sinai of Brookline and Temple Ohabei Shalom. Join in this Jewish moment with us.
