What Makes a Work of Art Jewish?

March 1, 2020 Boston $125.00 - $175.00
Canceled
“The Falling Angel” by Marc Chagall
“The Falling Angel” by Marc Chagall

Have you ever been struck, inexplicably, by the Jewish-ness of a work of art? What are the criteria for a work to be labeled as Jewish? Is the identity of the artist as such enough to constitute Jewishness, and if so, can non-Jewish artists create work that is in some sense, Jewish?

Together with artist and educator Ari Zimmet we will consider a wide range of art, from Rothko and Chagall to Krasner and Chicago, the temple of Solomon and Holy of Holies to mezuzot and your grandmother’s channukiah. We will start with critic Harold Rosenberg’s 1966 essay “Is There a Jewish Art” and move forward by both challenging his four categories and using them as a guide.

The class will include at least one trip to the MFA. The weekly class runs through April 5.
