Please join us for the inaugural session of WORDS: Women Organizing, Reading, Discussing, and Socializing, a partnership between CJP’s Read On program and Women’s Philanthropy.

Together, we will engage in small-group discussions at a volunteer’s home. Each cohort of 10-15 women will read Dara Horn’s breathtaking novel “Eternal Life,” the book chosen for CJP’s annual Read On event.

Enjoy learning more about yourself and your neighbors through the fascinating story of “Eternal Life,” along with other Jewish texts. Each session will lead to meaningful discussions and explorations around the following themes:

  • Familial vs. romantic love
  • Identity
  • Parenting
  • The meaning of life vs. death
  • Fate
  • Mortality vs. immortality
  • Medical ethics

2019 WORDS schedule:

What’s the book about?

Rachel, the protagonist, is a woman with a problem: she can’t die. Her recent troubles—widowhood, a failing business, an unemployed middle-aged son—are only the latest in a litany spanning dozens of countries, scores of marriages and hundreds of children.

In the 2,000 years since she made a spiritual bargain to save the life of her first son back in Roman-occupied Jerusalem, she’s tried everything to free herself. Only one other person in the world understands, a man she once loved passionately, who has been stalking her through the centuries, and is convinced they belong together forever.

But as the 21st century begins and her children and grandchildren—consumed with immortality in their own ways, from the frontiers of digital currency to genetic engineering—develop new technologies that could change her fate and theirs, Rachel knows she must find a way out.
