First Grade Hebrew Teacher, Dana Fogel, helped our first graders show their parents just how far they have come in Hebrew this year. “In Ivrit Al Haboker, we are opening our doors for parents to come and see Hebrew in action through classroom centers. The centers provide a glimpse into all four skills of language – reading, writing, speaking and listening.” Dana shares. Amy Comander, mother of first grader David Comander, was impressed with what she saw. Amy shares about her experience, “I was so excited to have the opportunity to visit David’s first grade classroom for the Ivrit Al Haboker program. It was wonderful to experience how Hebrew is taught to the first grade students. In the first center, Dana supervised the children playing Bingo entirely in Hebrew. I was very impressed by the vocabulary that the children have acquired thus far. In the second center, the children used Play-Doh to form Hebrew letters and make words. In the third center, the children read a story in Hebrew with a teacher’s assistance. The teacher asked questions to assess the students’ reading comprehension, and it was clear that the children understood the story and were learning new vocabulary words. In the last center, the children were asked to make a collage and write a sentence in Hebrew describing their picture. David wrote a sentence – entirely in Hebrew – about robots eating ice cream! I am incredibly impressed by the innovative approach to Hebrew language instruction in the first grade. I can tell that the children are developing a strong foundation that will lead to fluency in Hebrew.”
