Jeff Scheur, the son of Gann’s Professional Development Coordinator Aviva Scheur, won NBC’s $75,000 Innovation Challenge in September 2012 for his role in NoRedInk.

Scheur is the founder of NoRedInk, a web-based learning tool that helps students improve their grammar and writing skills. NoRedInk uses a search engine that generates a personalized curriculum based on students’ favorite celebrities, friends and personal interests and adjusts to their abilities with tutorials and questions. Instead of students receiving essays and assignments covered in corrections with red ink, Scheur’s site provides immediate and differentiated feedback so the same mistakes are not repeated.

Scheur taught high school English for eight years and received National Board Certification in 2011. After grading 15,000 English papers, he created NoRedInk to transform the teacher-to-student feedback process.

NoRedInk has seen its traction increase as well, including 8,000 students and teachers signing up per week. Additionally, students solve 75,000 grammar questions every day on the site and 250 schools have submitted applications for NoRedInk Premium, an exclusive full-service pilot for schools.

NoRedInk has been featured on the TODAY ShowMashableU.S. News & World Report and Hack Education.
