Mosaic Outdoor Clubs of America, the largest outdoor Jewish organization in the nation, has set its sights on New England for its annual five-day get together on Labor Day weekend.

The event, which is open to members and non-members, singles and couples, is an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts of all experience levels (including newbies) to get together in a friendly and sociable environment with fellow Jews to explore the outdoors.

This year’s event will take place at Camp Yavneh in Northwood, New Hampshire from Thursday, Aug. 29 to Monday, Sept. 2. Camp Yavneh is a kosher summer camp with modern and comfortable facilities.

The event is called “Meander in New Hampshire — a North American Jewish Adventure Getaway,” and discounted early registration is already underway. The event, a tradition dating back 25 years, is organized and run almost entirely by volunteers.

“I’ve been in Mosaic for nearly a decade, and the event we’re planning for this August is really going to be special,” said Terry Auspitz, president of Mosaic Outdoor Clubs of America. “Between the top-notch facilities and the level of activities that we’ve organized, attendees are definitely going to have an exciting and enjoyable weekend weekend.”

Mosaic began in Colorado in 1988, and now has more than a dozen chapters around the country, in Canada and in Israel. This event routinely attracts more than 100 participants from all over the country and Canada. Events have been held up and down the East Coast, Wisconsin, Colorado, Quebec, Ontario and California.

Daytime activities include hikes to nearby parks and to the White Mountains and peaks around Lake Winnipesaukee, sea kayaking, trips to historic areas around Portsmouth, rock climbing, games in camp and other tourist attractions. Evenings will include a live contra band dance, seminars, social events and bonfires. Creative Shabbat services will take place Friday night and Saturday, with a very moving Havdallah service on Saturday evening. All food in the camp will be kosher.

The weekend is a friendly and relaxed affair, and you do not need to be a Mosaic member to attend (though it does get you a discount). Attendees either drive themselves to the event, or fly to Boston or Manchester, NH. From there, a Thursday afternoon shuttle bus will bring campers to Yavneh in time for dinner.

Albany, N.Y. resident Alan Wechsler came to his first Mosaic Labor Day event in 2002, and has been to four more since then. Now he is partnering with Mosaic veteran Brian Horowitz of  Bridgewater, N.J. to co-chair the committee helping to organize this summer’s event.

“I came to my first event in Haliburton, Canada not knowing what to expect,” Wechsler recalled. “I left having made dozens of friends, exhausted and sleep-deprived from having had so much fun. I really don’t know of a better way to meet other Jewish people who share my love for the outdoors — and because it’s almost all volunteer, the price is quite reasonable.”

This five-day event will cost $369 to members, $415 to non-members who book by June 30. Non-members should join a Mosaic chapter of their choice to take advantage of a discounted “early-registration” price. Housing, meals, and a wide variety of activities are included in the base price.
