Mazal tov, Patriots! There’s no question that Boston is kvelling with pride as the Patriots head to their ninth Super Bowl, tied with the Cowboys and the Steelers at the top of the list of teams making it to the big game.
Despite the pigskin being the ultimate in treif, the 49th annual Super Bowl wouldn’t be the same without some key Jewish contributions:
- The Pats wouldn’t be the team they are without dedicated owner Robert Kraft, the ultimate—and local—Nice Jewish Boy.
- Wide receiver and punt returner Julian Edelman is another Nice Jewish Boy who was proud to share his heritage in an NFL Network interview. Just as this is the Pats’ ninth trip to the Super Bowl, this could be the year the ninth Jew ever will win a Super Bowl ring!
- Knishes make the perfect game day treat. I’m drooling over the options that Michael’s Deli will be serving up: fried mozzarella and marinara, loaded potato skin and buffalo chicken. Get to Coolidge Corner quickly to pick some up!
- Whether you love her as Elsa, Elphaba, Maureen or otherwise, Jewish goddess Idina Menzel will sing the National Anthem this year.
- The late Myra Kraft was not only Bob’s wife but an incredible leader in her own right in the Boston Jewish community. A woman who loved the Pats and the Jewish community? Now there’s something to celebrate.
