What IS papercutting, you ask? Well, if you think of the paper snowflakes you made when you were little, you’re not so far off. Papercutting, simply, is the art of creating designs out of simple sheets of paper by creating positive and negative space (or in English, by making a design and cutting the holes out of it!). The artform of papercutting goes far beyond simple snowflakes, and many Jewish homes are decorated with ornate works and ketubot that bring a beautiful sense of spirituality into the home.created at: 2013-04-05

Papercutting has long been a Jewish tradition, partially because we have a plethora of images and symbols that make for great home decor. More importantly, in a tradition where we have often been forced to move, carry our things with us, and are not able to schlep printing presses and large scale things of the like, papercutting has very simple demands- paper, a cutting tool, and creativity!

On Tuesday, April 9th, join the New Center NOW DIY Arts Circle and the Moishe Kavod House for a deeper look into this artform — and have some fun with an xacto knife! Papercut artist Laura Mandel will teach you how to translate your ideas into a beautiful work of art that’s ideal for your home, a wedding/baby gift, cards, and more.
