Melissa Roiter and Jacqui Goldberg lead very busy lives. Both are mothers with young families and three children (each have sets of multiples), both have small baking companies they run out of their homes, and both are active in their community through their involvement with Jewish Family Service of Metrowest, a Framingham-based organization that offers services to those in need within the community at all stages of the lifecycle regardless of faith or background.

For Roiter and Goldberg the desire to give back and become involved in their community was strong. “I felt lucky to be satisfied in so many areas of my life that I wanted to give back somehow,” said Goldberg. Roiter agrees, “Although we’re busy, I think there are creative ways to give back that you can fit into your schedule.”

Both ladies found their volunteer outlets at JFS. Over time, each has formed ties to the JFS Board of Directors, strengthening their relationship with the organization. Roiter is a member of the board, while in the case of Goldberg, it is her husband, Jeff. “My involvement began after someone from JFS came to a women’s leadership group meeting I was attending and spoke about the organization,” said Roiter. “I was impressed with the scope of reach JFS has in the community. There are services offered for so many different needs.”

From there, Roiter found herself volunteering at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham, teaching the students in the JFS run Wilson Wizards after-school program about baking from a science perspective. “I had such a great time volunteering that I started going to board meetings and being on the board seemed like the next step,” she says.

For Goldberg, her introduction to JFS came through her attendance of some of the Jewish Family Network events, a network that works out of JFS to connect young families through activities and classes.  “After Jeff joined the board, I became increasingly more involved and started meeting others involved with JFS and learning about all the wonderful things they do.”

This year both women have donated their skills as food providers at JFS’ annual Seas the Dream Gala. This marks the second year of participation for Goldberg (and her company, Cakes by J and J) and the first year of participation for Roiter (and her company, Yummy Mummy Brownies.) Both women are also members of the Food Committee. These two have found a way to give back that both utilizes their talents and skills and fits into their busy lives—proving that there are many diverse and fulfilling ways to give back and become involved in the community.

The JFS of Metrowest gala will take place on Sunday, May 1 at 5:30pm at the Sheraton Hotel in Framingham, MA. The event will feature food from over fifty of the area’s best local restaurants and a silent auction. For more information, visit www.jfsmw.org.
