created at: 2012-03-08Love’s Voice looks at the power and beauty of love. The featured work of the program is For a Look or a Touch by the renowned American composer Jake Heggie. It is the poignant true story of Manfred Lewin and Gad Beck, two young Jewish men who were lovers in Berlin in the Holocaust. Gad survived; Manfred perished in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Their story is the basis for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s online exhibition, Do You Remember, When. The piece is based on Gad’s reflection on their days together when he is visited by the memory of Manfred. It evokes the rapture, excitement and joy of young love and the healing glow of remembrance. The work is a joint commission by the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus and the Seattle Men’s Chorus, and was first performed in Seattle.  Reviewers have called this masterpiece “unabashedly theatrical” and “a sharply poignant, deeply affecting work.”

The first half of the program contains a wide variety of great music about love. It includes several Gershwin classics, spirited music by Adele, and favorites from Ricky Martin, the landmark gay musical Falsettoland and, of course, Judy Garland.

Performances are at 8PM on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall.
