Eser 2013: Top Ten Influential Jews will be starting in February! Join us to explore the lives of some iconic Jewish figures throughout Jewish history, their legacies and the challenges that shaped them. Share Shabbat meals and social outings as well!
Eser groups will meet in Allston, Brookline, Cambridge, Canton and Newton. Each group will be facilitated by a fabulous young leader. Meet this year’s team:
Elisha Gechter is the Associate Director of Adult Learning at Hebrew College and spent four years working in CJP’s Young Leadership Division. She grew up in New York and has called Cambridge her home for the last six years. She enjoys leading services at Minyan Tehillah. Jewish education and cooking are her passions and she combines the two in her blog: www.elishasdoubleportion.blogspot.com.
Rabbi Emma Gottlieb is the newly appointed rabbi at Temple Beth David, in Canton. A Torontonian, she was ordained at theHebrew Union College but got her start studying in the Debbie Friedman Sacred School of Music. She loves to blend teaching, dialogue and song to explore Jewish values. She enjoys knitting, downhill skiing, reality TV, and is a big hockey fan (but looks forward to becoming a football fan now that she lives in MA).
Rabbi Neil Hirsch joined the staff of Temple Shalom in Newton in June 2010, but was familiar with Greater Boston from his college days at Tufts. He was born and raised in Houston,Texas, and received his ordination from Hebrew Union College in New York City. Rabbi Hirsch is an avid cyclist and runner—he ran in the November 2009 New York City Marathon.
Rabbi Rachel Silverman is director of congregational learning at Congregation Kehillath Israel (KI) in Brookline. An alumna of Brandeis University, she also received rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Rachel created the “Real Men Marry Rabbis” T-shirt, of which hundreds have sold worldwide, and launched Homegrown Judaica (www.homegrownjudaica.com), an online art marketplace.
Seth Wax is in his final year at Hebrew College Rabbinical School in Newton. Hailing from Sharon, he studied Buddhism for a number of years, which sparked his interest in Kabbalah, Hasidut, and comparative Jewish-Buddhist theology. He has worked and taught at Prozdor, the Foundation for Jewish Camp, and Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. In his spare time, Seth loves hiking, kayaking, cooking, and meditation.
