As part of the Jewish Advocate’s Simcha special section, we asked the community for their wedding stories, whether sweet or strange. Bradley Saenger of Brookline shared his story.

Would you like some ketchup with that?

“My wife Elana and I were married at the Manhattan Beach Jewish center in September 2001. We had decided we would just have the wedding cake as dessert, but we felt that would be too plain. The caterer suggested we drizzle a raspberry sauce over the cake to add something special to the dessert and we agreed.

As any typical bride and groom, we and our immediate family were very preoccupied with the wedding festivities and didn’t pay attention to the cake being handed around. But then, guests began to come up to us and ask us if the cake was supposed to be covered in ketchup. At first we thought it was a joke, but we were shocked that instead of raspberry sauce, the cake really was bathed in ketchup.

While we can laugh at it now and have a great story to tell our children, at the time is was quite embarrassing. Apparently, the raspberry sauce was put in a similar container to that of the ketchup. Whoever was responsible for preparing the dessert picked up the wrong container.”
