For three years the New Center for Arts and Culture and Camp Harbor View have worked together to produce a dynamic summer performance series called the Explore World Arts program.

In 2007, Boston businessman and philanthropist Jack Connors and Mayor Menino founded Camp Harbor View, a summer camp located on Long Island in Boston harbor. Together, they created the Camp Harbor View Foundation, and today the camp provides an unforgettable and affordable summer experience for upwards of 800 Boston youth from all parts of the city.

The New Center began its program at the camp in 2008, and we have found great success matching a variety of cultural performance groups with the energy and enthusiasm of the campers. Explore World Arts has brought Japanese taiko drummers, Latin salsa groups and a variety of other dance and musical performers. Many of the campers come from at-risk neighborhoods in Boston and otherwise might not have the chance to experience such a great wealth of cultures and performers. We strive to bring the best performers the city has to offer, and this year we have a fantastic lineup, including performances ranging from Congolese music to contemporary American dance.

The New Center has also worked with other Boston area organizations, in the past bringing performances to the Charlestown, Chelsea and Roxbury Boys and Girls Clubs summer camps.

While the New Center’s focus is on helping Bostonians view ideas and the world through a Jewish lens, we are also a cultural center, and the Explore World Arts program allows us to help contribute to these campers’s love and appreciation of cultures around the world and the different art forms they bring to our city.

The New Center will be posting weekly updates on the program and performances, which run every week through August 23rd; the first performance is next Thursday, June 30th. If anyone has questions or comments, please send an email to cmahler@ncacboston.org.
