Job Title: Senior Philanthropy Associate

Salary Range: Commensurate with level of education and experience

Work Schedule: 40 hour full-time position with benefits

Position Description: Jewish Family Service (JFS) of Metrowest is a Framingham, Massachusetts, based nonprofit agency that provides vital social, health and community services to alleviate suffering, enhance lives and support people in need. JFS is a multi-cultural, multi-linguistic organization with deep roots in both the Jewish and broader community.

JFS seeks a Senior Philanthropy Associate who will support the Senior Director of Philanthropy to foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization and assure that the organization’s culture, systems and procedures support fund development and vice versa. The Senior Philanthropy Associate helps to lead the staff and board to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization.

The Senior Philanthropy Associate must have strong strategic planning skills and be capable of developing and implementing clear goals, systems and priorities. S/He must be hands-on and a strategic leader with experience at developing collaborative relationships, both internally and externally with the ability to translate the JFS mission into resource development opportunities. Additionally, the Senior Philanthropy Associate must be skilled in managing a complex workload and have the ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with agency executives, JFS management, and the Board of Directors.

Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone/web solicitation, direct mail, and development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

  • Master’s degree preferred in a relevant discipline with at least 10 years of increasingly responsible managerial experience and knowledge of the non-profit/social service delivery sector.
  • Demonstrated success as a development executive in a large nonprofit and success fundraising from multiple donor channels.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development plan with proven results.
  • Proven success in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with major individual donors and other potential donors.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with experience in development and marketing- related writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a focus on attention to detail.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to project professional competence, leadership capability and personal maturity.
  • Ability to present in a convincing and professional manner and to inspire and generate enthusiasm among donors, volunteers, and staff.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to leverage resources, reduce costs and improve overall performance.
  • Support the Senior Director of Philanthropy to ensure that philanthropy and fund development are carried out in keeping with JFS vision, mission, values and plans. Participate with the CEO, Senior Director of Philanthropy, Leadership Team and Board, recommending and implementing short- and long-range fund development plans and programs.
  • Manage the development of strategies to support the growth of resources necessary to achieve agency goals, as well as the continued growth of the Annual Campaign.
  • Grow existing Legacy and Endowment Campaigns.
  • Develop a multi- year giving plan for major donors
  • Assist Senior Director of Philanthropy to develop a balanced mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the agency that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.
  • Help establish performance measures, monitor results and help the CEO/ Senior Director of Philanthropy and Board evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program.
  • Assist with the creation of all written fundraising materials, including reports, appeal letters and event invitations, as well as producing the Annual Report.
  • Maintain a portfolio of individual donors, working with the CEO/Senior Director of Philanthropy to regularly communicate, cultivate and solicit these top donors.
  • Through stewardship, the Senior Philanthropy Associate, together with the Resource Development Team , will manage the donor relations desk, linking donors to the appropriate resources.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
  • Together with the Senior Director of Philanthropy, work with the CEO, Development Committee(s) chair(s) and chair of the Board of Directors to ensure fulfillment of fund development roles and facilitate the optimum interaction between management and volunteers.
          • Engage people in process, encourage questioning, and promote participatory decision-making.
          • Together with the development committee(s) chair(s), develop agendas for meetings so that the committees can fulfill their responsibilities effectively.
          • Develop an annual calendar to cover all crucial development issues in a timely fashion.
          • Inform the CEO/Senior Director of Philanthropy and Board on the condition of the organization’s fund development program and on all important factors influencing it.
          • Get the best thinking and involvement of each board member and fundraising volunteer.
          • Work with the CEO and Board to make the development committee(s) and the board function effectively in fund development.
  • Serve as a primary major gift solicitor.
  • Together with Senior Director of Philanthropy, develop appropriate management systems enabling the conducting of large-scale fundraising solicitations, and the subsequent recording and tracking of results, and providing effective stewardship for all donors.
  • Consider ways of expanding the base of contributors at all levels and from all parts of the community using donor acquisition, social media and other methods.
  • Foster a culture that promotes teamwork and professional growth while pursuing an aggressive, creative fundraising program.
