At Temple Chayai Shalom we have been engaged this fall in a series of family learning sessions on the theme of Shabbat. Families of second grade students were invited to participate with all the family siblings. To support connections between classroom learning and the family Shabbat experiences, we created material to encourage family conversations around the Shabbat table. There is much evidence that family conversations contribute to children’s wellbeing and Jewish tradition has so much to offer in the realm of meaningful conversations. The classes also used these weekly sheets to reflect about the Torah portion during the in-school tefilah on Tuesday afternoons. An example of a sheet is posted below.  We invite you to check out our blog at where you can see sheets from this fall, see what others have written, and post your own reflections. The sheets were written by Ronit Ziv-Kreger, who is the consultant supporting us with this CJP pilot program. If you’d like more information you can contact her at or our education director, Kim Bodemer at

Shabbat shalom and I hope this catalyzes a great conversation around your Shabbat table,
