Meet New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the JCC Greater Boston‘s Leventhal-Sidman Center. Edelman will read from a special edition of his kids’ book, “Flying High,” starting at 5:30 p.m. The event is part of programming by the PJ Library, which partners with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and other local funders to provide children in the Boston area with free Jewish children’s books and music.
“PJ Library enables families raising Jewish children throughout the Boston area to connect with Jewish values and traditions in new ways, helping to bring families together in their understanding of their heritage,” JCC Boston’s PJ Library coordinator Jamie Darsa said in a release.
The Newton reading is geared toward 5- to 11-year-olds and coincides with the mailing of 25,000 copies of a special edition of “Flying High” to 5-year-olds across the United States and Canada who participate in PJ Library.
Not familiar with the tale? Originally published in late 2016, the book tells the semi-autobiographical story of a football-playing squirrel named, ahem, Jules. The edition that Edelman will read on Oct. 10 and sent to children is a version created especially for PJ Library, which worked with Edelman and his co-author, Assaf Swissa, to take the story from an idea to the published book released last year. Edelman, whose dad is Jewish but whose mom isn’t, reconnected with his Jewish heritage during a 2015 trip to Israel.
The book touches on timeless themes like hard work and resilience against all odds.
