High school students from B’nai Torah in Sudbury just returned from lobbying Congress on Capitol Hill in favor of a bill that would dramatically increase the amount of money available for people who need access to mental health care services.

Students met with staffers in the offices of Sen. Warren, Sen. Markey, Rep. Clark and Rep. Trahan and shared data and personal stories highlighting the need for increased funding for mental health services.

Rabbi Dr. Lisa Eiduson accompanied students on this four-day trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the L’Taken Social Justice Seminar sponsored by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC).

The group, along with hundreds of students from around the country, attended programs on bail and election reform, homelessness, mental health and reproductive rights, and later wrote lobby speeches on areas of interest, which were then reviewed with RAC legislative staff.

Students had an opportunity to visit the Martin Luther King Jr.  Memorial and the Holocaust Museum and attended a Havdalah service at the close of Shabbat at the Jefferson Memorial.
