Distinguished Israeli healthcare leaders recently toured the Leonard Florence Center for Living, the country’s first urban model Green House.® Dorit Rubenstein, national superintendent nurse in the Ministry of Health in Israel; Yaron Raz, MA, executive director of Beit Avraham Nursing Home; and Irit Fischer, manager of gerontology programs and palliative unit at JDC Israel Eshel, visited the Leonard Florence Center in Chelsea in the hope of duplicating this award-winning model of care in Israel. Operated by Chelsea Jewish Lifecare (CJL), the Leonard Florence Center is the only kosher Green House skilled nursing home in New England.
The Green House model is designed from the bottom up to look and feel like a real home in every possible way. Steve Saling, a resident at the Center, conducted the tour with CJL CEO Barry Berman, CJL COO Betsy Mullen and CJL Director of Admissions Ina Hoffman. The group toured the highly acclaimed Steve Saling ALS Residence, one of the Center’s three specialized ALS and MS homes. Steve actually designed the residences, equipped with cutting-edge technology, shortly after he was diagnosed with ALS. Today, the Leonard Florence Center cares for more individuals living with ALS than anyplace else in the world. The contingent also visited the Pearlman House, which provides long-term skilled nursing care for seniors.
“We were honored to have such esteemed professionals visit our organization,” said Barry Berman. “It’s exciting to think that the Leonard Florence Center in Chelsea could be replicated in Israel. This innovative model of care has the potential to change the face of nursing homes throughout the world.”
Although there are currently no true Green House facilities in Israel, Yaron Raz operates Beit Avraham, a skilled nursing residence “inspired” by the Green House model, with kitchens on every floor and an abundance of glass and natural light. After Boston, the group from Israel headed to New York to visit Green Houses in both the city and upstate.
