On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, students from JCDS, Boston’s Jewish Community Day School in Watertown had the opportunity to visit the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury.
Middle-schoolers participating in the Comparative Religion elective were given a tour of the center and mosque while learning and asking questions about Islamic religion and history, in an effort to strengthen the relationship and highlight the similarities between Judaism and Islam.
The impact of the Comparative Religion Elective, where middle-schoolers were introduced to the five major world religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – has been profound on the students and staff. Middle school educator Andrea Silton commented: “This journey that has allowed us to get to know people of other religions in a way that we might not have otherwise. We put a face to the other and they became our friends. Today we learned that there is so much more that connects the Jewish community to the Muslim community than divides us.”
