I’ve always liked mosaic art and have tried my hand at it a few times, but speaking with each of these mosaic artists on JLive over the course of COVID-19 has given me a whole new appreciation for the art form.

While each of these artists defines themself as a mosaic artist, each of their styles is unique. And what I find equally beautiful is that they all speak to the very Jewish concept of broken tiles and their connection to repairing the world, tikkun olam.

Whether you’re interested in a new hobby, finding the perfect sentimental gift or otherwise, these are some great artists to know.

Cecilia Kremer

Gorgeous sentimental art that you’ll want on your walls or table

Cecilia Kremer speaks beautifully about the healing power and meaning of mosaic, and the sentimental pieces of Judaica that she creates are equally beautiful and impressive. She has recently started doing mosaic pet portraits, and I may have to talk to her about my cat!

Joshua Winer

Art that represents communities

I have long searched for the right community project to work on with Joshua Winer. He works with communities of all ages and backgrounds to create massive and stunning community murals, with an incredible knack for bringing participants into the vision and execution of the piece

Mia Schon

Public art that sends a message

Mia Schon has used mosaic for messaging in and around Tel Aviv and made quite an impact with her “we were all once refugees” mosaic. These large-scale public art installations each tell a story and have been created by and for the communities where they are installed. Mia has been living back in Boston since COVID-19. Instead of in-person mosaic making, Mia has been doing online paper mosaic classes, and they are so much fun!

Audrey Markoff

Learn to make your own art for your home

Audrey Markoff’s use of hand-rolled polymer clay tiles gives her a great brightness. I love how her technique and materials are accessible to people of all ages, and her students have created some beautiful work. Looking for a new hobby? Check out Audrey’s classes!

And there are so many other mosaic artists in town who have yet to join us!
