When Schechter parent and community artist Tova Speter came to us with the idea of creating something beautiful on both campuses, it was a perfect opportunity to start the year in a happy, positive way. Schechter has assigned every grade a color, and each class a shade of that color, to help with way-finding and spirit-raising. A team of volunteers composed of students, faculty, staff and parents finished painting just before school started last week. (Click here for the behind-the-scenes footage.)

Shalom
Pavement mural at Schechter’s Gan Shelanu/Upper School Campus

This mosaic-inspired mural highlights the importance of every individual in contributing to the whole, and our need for the vibrancy that our students bring to activate our space and reveal the hidden shalom. The Hebrew word shalom may have always been there, but can only be seen when all of the pieces come together and we are able to shift our perspective to embrace it. This mural will now greet our students as they enter and exit our school, help guide them in their travels and add much-needed color to our world.

One Heart
Pavement mural at Schechter’s Lower School Campus

This playful mural utilizes a spectrum of colors (representing all the student cohorts) that come together to reveal a heart welcoming community members into the building. The spirit of our community is sourced in love with a heart at the core of all that we do. The color-coded, socially distanced paw prints (inspired by the Schechter panther mascot) let students know where to stand and what direction to walk in/out of the building, adding a way-finding functionality to the artwork. This mural offers brightness as students enter and exit our school and adds much-needed color to our world.

With many thanks to Schechter parents, students and staff; Mark Ufland of Memories in an Instant, who captured images of the Upper School mural; Grant Hildman, store manager at Sherwin-Williams in Newton Centre; and John Paul from MJ Painting & Renovation.
