The following is Rabbi Lerner’s response to an article in the 21 Nov 2010 NY Times titled “Bar Mitzvah Studies Take to the Web

 

To the Editor:

I think we have lost the forest for the trees in “An Online Path to the Bar Mitzvah,” by Amy Virshup (Sunday Styles, Nov. 21).

Unlike those undergoing online bar mitzvah training, in our synagogue community, students meet with their tutor each week in person, forming a personal relationship and learning skills, not just memorizing.

In our increasingly atomized world filled with more and more electronic gadgetry, but less and less meaningful social and spiritual interactions, we need more real synagogues and fewer virtual ones.
