When I heard about the disastrous fire in Israel, it really struck a chord with me, and I knew that I had to do something to help the relief efforts, something more than just sending a donation.

With the idea I came up with, “Shave a Redhead for Israel”, I was able to raise a little over $3,600 in just one week!

The idea was simple… I told my friends, family, and coworkers that if they donated enough money to relief efforts during my week-long appeal, not only would they be doing a big mitzva, they’d be getting a big laugh as well, because I’d shave my head! As I told them, “Some guys look good bald. Then there’s me.” But that wasn’t all… I set the threshold at $1,800 for head shaving, or $3,600 for shaving my head and half my beard and mustache, or $5,400 for shaving my head, half my beard and mustache, and the opposite eyebrow.

Alas, the eyebrow was not to be, but as I said, i did manage to raise a little over $3,600, so next month I’ll be shaving my head and half my beard and mustache in front of my coworkers at our annual kick-off meeting. A good time will be had by all, and I’ll be walking around in a big Bucharian kippah for a month or two!

I’d love to see others try this quirky idea or something like it to encourage their friends, family and coworkers to donate to a good cause.
