“Shtisel” has none of the trappings of a hit TV show. It’s a slow-moving, small-budget, often melancholy exploration of the lives of an ultra-religious Haredi family, tackling themes like death and grief, marital strife, child marriage, artistic struggles and…kugel. Surprisingly, the show has become a global phenomenon, despite lacking the more common Israeli television themes of political conflict, terrorism or PTSD.
In two seasons, the show won a slew of Ophirs—the Israeli Emmys—including for best drama and for best actor, best directing and best script in a drama series, and was recently renewed for a third season. While the show, produced by the Yes network in Israel, has been streaming worldwide on Netflix since last December, The Vibe of the Tribe team finally finished the first two seasons ourselves.
