This month I’m thinking about food, for which I have a love/fear relationship. I’ve always loved food and have been fortunate that I could eat basically whatever I wanted. Then I had my daughter, Isabel, who was diagnosed with 10 (yes, 10!) food allergies when she was 1.
Until I became a mom, I never realized how scary it could be to feed your child. The pediatrician would tell me, “Watch her closely to make sure she doesn’t stop breathing.” Nothing like those words to make a new mom panic! The unanticipated result was that Isabel ate only wonderfully fresh and healthful foods. It turned out she was allergic to every kind of “junk food,” so once we understood and found lots of great foods and other parents who would share ideas and recipes, it wasn’t so bad after all.
Now that she’s 5 and has outgrown all her allergies except for nuts, we appreciate having a wide array of food options. We still try to eat healthful and “pure” foods as often as possible, like this healthy veggie snack recipe.
