The thing about being an adult is that, as our children tell us, we sometimes think we know everything. We piece together sense memories, conversations we have heard, movies we’ve seen and stories from books we’ve read (or even read about) to create our view of the world. For the most part, it works. Except that sometimes, it doesn’t.
I know this from personal experience as it relates to Jewish Overnight Camp.
Three years ago, I thought I knew what it looked like. Of course, I did. I went to two different Jewish Overnight Camps, Kingswood and Pembroke, when I was a kid. I also knew a pretty large group of other kids who’d gone. Then, there were the stories I heard from parents who were my friends about camp. What more did I need to know? It turns out, a lot.
I have now visited 15 camps over the past 3 summers (most more than once) stretching from Southern Massachusetts to Maine. These camps are diverse, modern, alive and pretty different than my memories from many years ago. This video will give you a glimpse and hopefully a little bit of the feeling but the only way you will really know is to go. Go ahead, go to tour camp.
