For those of you who may not be familiar with the agency, every spring, JFS of Metrowest holds an annual fundraising gala called Seas the Dream. The gala is an opportunity to acknowledge the work we’ve accomplished, eat some delicious food, enjoy some great company, and possibly walk away with a cool new toy from our silent auction.
But most importantly, the gala is a platform to say Thank You to JFS volunteers who have continually risen above and beyond the call of duty for our agency. This year we thank three individuals whose loyalty and dedication knows no bounds: Fran and David Elovitz and family and Lawrence (Larry) Lowenthal, Ph.D.
Over the years, the Elovitz family has made significant contributions to strengthen JFS. This is why they will be the first family to be honored at Seas the Dream. Fran and David will share the spotlight with two additional generations: children Ken and Patti Elovitz, Sara and Dave Adelizzi, Gary and Dena Elovitz and their grandchildren Jesse, Noah, Nadav and Ilan.
Their involvement is vast. Dave is a former volunteer for our All Stars after-school program at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham. Every year Fran sews together the annual quilt made by the students in the Wizards after-school program. Fran, Dave, and their daughter, Sara, have held positions on past Seas the Dream committees. Sara has also assisted with volunteer work for our elder care services.
Both Dave and Sara have served together on the Board of JFS, a capacity in which Dave continues to serve. Sara continues her work with JFS as a “long-distance volunteer,” as she is now based mostly in Florida.
Fran and Dave have received numerous honors in the community as a couple: the Philip W. Lown Distinguished Service Award, JCDS 2002-2003 honorees, the Israel Bonds Award, the Second Century Award from Jewish Theological Seminary and the Temple Israel Geshelin Humanitarian Award.
Larry Lowenthal has been involved with JFS since the early days of the organization. Over the years he has utilized his intellect, personal experiences and community connections on behalf of the organization to increase our presence in the community and allow us to expand the reach of our programs.
Larry’s involvement in the Jewish community and the community at large far exceeds the work he has done at JFS. He has been honored and recognized for his extraordinary life of service including, most recently, The Ordre National du Merite-Grade de Chevalier, announced by the President of France. In 2010 he received the Murray I. Rothman Award for outstanding interreligious leadership from Temple Shalom of Newton and the Andover Newton Theological School.
Larry and his wife Pauline live in Brookline and have three grown children, Marc, Eve and Jessica. He maintains close ties with many of those who helped build our local Jewish community.
