Congregation Ahavas Achim will present children’s book author and Holocaust historian Elisa Boxer on the release of her latest book, “Under the Rubble: The Hidden Letters of the Warsaw Ghetto.”
Her talk is part of the congregation’s annual commemoration of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) and the 83rd anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
“Under the Rubble” tells the true story of Warsaw Ghetto Jews who kept meticulous records of life as the Nazis closed in and then buried those records deep underground. After the war, the only survivor who knew where the documents were buried led the effort to unearth them.
Elisa’s commitment to stories of the Holocaust and her connection to Newburyport are both personal. Her grandfather’s family fled Russia during the pogroms of a century ago and settled in Newburyport. Her great-grandfather, Samuel Boxer, sold used furniture from a pushcart beginning in 1917, and her grandfather, Louis Boxer, launched Boxer’s Furniture in 1949, a Newburyport landmark store that lasted nearly four decades.
The program will open with remarks from Rabbi Alex Matthews and readings by Newburyport High School students, who will share original poems inspired by the Holocaust. Boxer will then read from “Under the Rubble” and discuss her research and writing process, followed by audience Q&A and a book signing.
All are welcome; caregivers are encouraged to use discretion for children under 8.
