The essentially true story of how an unassuming and irreverent Jewish grandmother from Boston took her facility with parody lyrics and dirty doggerel to the prestigious BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York City, where she learned that there’s a lot more to writing theater lyrics than rhyming succincter with sphincter. Featuring songs from new shows under development, some salty but unleavened songs about Passover as performed at Joe’s Pub and other originals.
Before fleeing Boston for the balmy shores of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Poppel appeared widely in the Boston area, including Overture Productions, Lyric Stage Company of Boston, Greater Boston Stage Company, Wheelock Family Theatre, Gloucester Stage, Greater Lowell Music Theatre, Company Theatre and Turtle Lane Playhouse.
Special guest James Harvey is a musical theater composer, lyricist and performer. His one-man show, “The Bald Faced Truth: Comedy Songs by James Harvey,” addresses such timely issues as porn addiction, the #resistance, cats and male pattern baldness. As a musical comedian, James has performed at New York City venues like 54 Below, The PIT Loft, Club Cumming, Sidewalk Cafe, The West End Lounge and The Triad.
