“Bukra Fil Mish Mish” (Promotional still)

Join local animator Alex Salsberg to learn how animation works, and create two simple but magical animation devices out of supplies you probably already have at home!

We’ll learn the ways in which animation “tricks” the eye, drawing on paper just like animators, including the Frenkel brothers from “Bukra Fil Mish Mish,” did back in the day. In a basement near Paris, a treasure trove of Egyptian animated films were discovered. The films show the work of the Arab world’s pioneers in this genre, the Frenkel brothers: three exceptional young filmmakers, creators of Mish-Mish Effendi, the Arabic equivalent of Mickey Mouse. These films disappeared from Egyptian screens when the State of Israel was created. Through their animated images, we uncover the history of the Frenkel family, marked by exile and a trauma being repeated today.
